The Social Network

Not the movie, but the product of the movie. Facebook is one of many of the social networking websites that dominate the world wide web (other notable examples include twitter- oneline status updates, and tumblr).

Facebook can be used as a promotional tool for libraries- a library can friend its patrons and in return, patrons can see status updates from the library on their home feed. Social networking sites can also be used to gather data on the preferences and tastes of library patrons, making it easier to develop the collection to the specific tastes of library patrons.

Instead of emailed or mailed library newsletters, facebook allows libraries to update patrons, customers and potential users of the library services in an instant.

Another brilliant feature of Facebook is that it allows patrons to ask post questions on the library's wall and the library can answer at its leisure.

A promotional feature on facebook (apart from the paid advertisements) is it allows picture posting. Flickr only allows images, blogspot does not reach a large enough audience- only those who are specifically looking, facebook gives the ultimate exposure to the internet connected population.

Thumbs up to facebook in aiding library exposure in the 21st century.
